I sent a PM about this to a mod but received no reply.

Basically I'm trying to change my username. Registration is closed and I've not used this account in years. Is this possible for a mod to do?

Secondly, is there a subforum for promotion and advertising? Where would be best to do so?

As a rule usernames are not changed. If you have a very good reason for wanting to change it you can send your request by owl to me or gertiekeddle.

There are no plans for reopening registration.

The closest to promotion and advertising we have are are the Writer's Corner where you can promote good, unpublished authors on the internet. And The Daily Prophet where you can advertise your Harry Potter related site. Advertising anything else is not allowed.

Doesn't look like that for the moment.

Almost ten months have passed since Mugglenet interfered in the closing. I'm afraid they quite soon lost interest in taking over the forums.

If Mugglenet are no longer interested in taking over, how is it that the site is still up?

(Not that I don't want it to be up, it was just really anticlimatic what happened...)

Obviously, new user registration has slowed to a trickle (if that), but if anyone is still reading these: There used to be a place where CoS users would sort new users. Is that place still up? If so, where is it? I couldn't find it.

I seem to remember we axed it when tidying up this place for the closure.

There were no noobs to sort anyway.

Yes, I noticed the newest student was added back in 2013. I was just thinking that it would be a bit fun to go back and see what some of the old Sortings were.

It's a bit sad that the place went so quiet after the last movie. (I'm not innocent of that, of course.)

The registration is closed isn't it? So that's why there aren't any new members. Is it possible to re-open it and maybe get some new users who might want to discuss the books? What's the rationale behind closing registration? Especially with Pottermore removing their house posting walls.

There simply weren't enough honest noobs among the spambots and trolls registering to make it worth the effort. During 2012 the situation got ever worse until none of us had the time for going through the daily list of registrations and checking everyone on that list.

It's a very sad thing, but the days when an international forum managed by volunteering idealists can succeed are gone. And they'll not come back.

The internet is as the internet does.

We also closed the registration a few weeks before the site actually should have closed, too. If MN hadn't intervened, that is...

Has there been a major change in the way this site advertises ? the reason I ask is after I get to the site and try to log in I'm getting tons of pop up adds so many that I'm not having any fun here any more . What can I do about it .

That's news to me. But I don't log out and back in very often. You haven't unblocked pop ups in your browser recently? Or got some malware that unblocks them?

What Alastor said. But we have also close to no technical maintenance these days. Alas it is possible that it is a not wanted ad add on our end. :/

Best advice I can say is just to have Adblock Plus. Haven't run into any ad pop ups on here lately.

I don't recall ever having here, OTOH I've had Adblock for years.

Same, aside from one redirect ad, but that was via a library computer. And they didn't have Adblock.
