Unfortunately I'm not image handling savvy enough to answer your question. But what the forum staff goes after is what it's properties are as uploaded in the sig. So I would recommend you to make the sig, check what dimensions it has in the sig and if they are over 300 in any direction take it out and resize before trying again.

We will not hang you for having a too big image for a few minutes.

Hey guys, I'm sorry if this has already been asked (I did read through the first few pages but this is a looong thread) but RE: the sig guidelines - when you say 300x300, is that the maximum AREA? As in, could you make your picture longer than 300 in length if you reduced the height correspondingly?

I used to make a lot of graphics and the size I always found best to work with was 500 pixels wide. I find it hard to make anything good that's 300pixels or below. Yeah I know, some people can make amazing graphics in MUCH less space than that but it's just what I'm used to

The 300 x 300 refers to length and height rather than area. So something that's 500 x 300 would be too wide.

So if you had something that was 500x100, would that be ok, because the overall area is still in line with the restriction? Or, say, two images of 150x150 each? I did say if you reduced the other property (ie height or width) correspondingly...if you understand what I mean.

300 is the maximum both for width and height. The number of images may not exceed 1. Smilies not in our Smilies list count as images.
